Smart Lock Programming: What the Technician Does After Installation
Smart lock programming is the step that turns a piece of hardware bolted to your door into an actual access-control system that knows who came in and when. Installation is purely mechanical: measuring the door, cutting the mortise pocket, mounting the front and back panels, and aligning the latch with the strike plate so the door closes smoothly without force. Programming is entirely digital: initialising the lock, binding it to the owner account, defining access permissions, and tuning its day-to-day behaviour. A perfectly installed but badly programmed lock will still open with a factory default code, lock you out, or drain its batteries within weeks. Here we focus on the software side. ## What the technician does immediately after installation ### Factory reset and initialisation The first action is a full factory reset. Retail units are often demo-tested, and stray fingerprints or test codes can remain from the shipment or showroom. A reset wipes all of it and guarantees a clean start. It is normally done by holding the Reset button inside the back panel while the batteries are inserted. ### Binding the lock to the owner account, not the technician This is the single most important point in this guide. On first initialisation, the first account paired with the lock becomes the Administrator — the only account able to add and remove users and read the access log. That account must be yours. Setting handing incorrectly makes the motor drive the latch the wrong way: the lock appears to work and makes its normal sound, but the door never actually opens. It is one of the most common phantom faults that trigger an unnecessary service visit. ### Deleting the default code and setting an admin code Every lock ships with a default code, usually 123456 or 0000, printed in a manual that is freely available online. Leaving it in place means anyone who recognises your lock model can open it. The technician deletes the default and sets a new admin code of at least six digits — not a birth date, not sequential digits, not the last four of your phone number. ### Enrolling the primary access methods Next, access credentials are enrolled for each household member: a fingerprint per person — ideally two fingers each, in case of a cut, sweat, or dry skin in summer — plus a numeric code and a card if supplied. Remote control and unlocking from outside the home require a Gateway paired to your Wi-Fi on the 2.4 GHz band specifically — not 5 GHz. This is an extremely common pairing failure that wastes time when the technician does not know it. The difference between the two connection types is explained at getfixlr.com/blog/smart-lock-wifi-vs-bluetooth. ### Final testing before handover Programming is not finished until it is tested: at least ten open-and-close cycles using every method (fingerprint, code, app, mechanical key), tested with the door fully closed rather than ajar, and confirming the latch enters the strike cleanly without the motor straining and draining the battery. ## Common programming mistakes we see in the field - Leaving the factory default code exactly as shipped. - Enrolling only one fingerprint for the homeowner, so a single injured finger locks them out. - Setting auto-lock to two seconds, so the door locks while someone is still outside. - Skipping the firmware update available in the app after pairing. - Pairing the gateway to a 5 GHz network and then blaming the lock. - Not handing over the mechanical override key, or leaving it inside the house.
